Numerical Linear Algebra and Computer Architecture : An Evolving Interaction
نویسنده
چکیده
The aim of this report is to highlight the evolving interaction between computer architecture on the one hand and the design and analysis of algorithms for numerical linear algebra on the other. This report can best be described as a collection of pointers to aspects of the development processes of numerical linear algebra, and to various existing surveys and software. The rich variety of activity in design, analysis, comparison and evaluation of algorithms, new and old, is examined in the context of rapid technological and architectural advance. The characteristics of algorithms for linear algebra are discussed without going into mathematical details: There are references to important surveys that provide such details. Reflections on the practices of numerical linear algebra will, it is hoped, point to possibilities for and limitations of automating the “mapping” of algorithms onto high performance computers. †The author greatly acknowledges the support of the Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC Grant GR/F/04292) for this work. †Copyright 1993. Potentials of Evolving Linear Models in Tracking Control Design for Nonlinear Variable Structure Systems
Evolving models have found applications in many real world systems. In this paper, potentials of the Evolving Linear Models (ELMs) in tracking control design for nonlinear variable structure systems are introduced. At first, an ELM is introduced as a dynamic single input, single output (SISO) linear model whose parameters as well as dynamic orders of input and output signals can change through ...
متن کاملLooking back at dense linear algebra software
Over the years, computational physics and chemistry served as an ongoing source of problems that demanded the ever increasing performance from hardware as well as the software that ran on top of it. Most of these problems could be translated into solutions for systems of linear equations: the very topic of numerical linear algebra. Seemingly then, a set of efficient linear solvers could be solv...

This is a survey of some work recently done at Argonne National Laboratory in an attempt to discover ways to construct numerical software for high performance computers. The numerical algorithms discussed are taken from several areas of numerical linear algebra. We discuss certain architectural features of advanced computer architectures that will affect the design of algorithms. The technique ...
